About Dazaifu Ginja

Dazaifu Tenmangu is a Shinto shrine. It is built over the grave of Michizane Sugawara who was celebrated as a man, pure in heart and deed, and after his death he was deified and worshipped as a God of Academia. The shrine's precinct spans over 3,000 acres (12 km2) and includes several structures.
Within the Shrine nature precinct are many plum trees, camphor tree, and irises, which provide nature beauty in every season of year. The grounds also contain two ponds, a bridge and a treasure house.

History

The honden, or main shrine, was first built by Yasuyuki Umasake in 905, two years after the death of Sugawara Michizane. A larger structure was constructed by the Fujiwara clan in 919 but was destroyed in a fire during during a civil war.

The Momoyama-styled shrine visitors see today dates from 1591.
